At Hound Pet Salon, we believe that good grooming is part skill, part science, and always rooted in care. Techniques and understanding evolve constantly, and we love keeping up to date with the very best in our industry.
On Sunday 19th October, we spent the day at the International Groomers Conference, where leading stylists and educators from around the world shared live demonstrations, insights, and fresh inspiration. It was a brilliant reminder of how much creativity and craftsmanship goes into every groom – and how important ongoing learning is for every professional.
Why continued learning matters
Every dog who visits us deserves the very best care. Continued education helps us refine our skills, stay current with coat-care science, and make sure each groom is both beautiful and comfortable.
Whether we’re hand-stripping a Schnauzer or tidying a Poodle cross, we always put wellbeing first.
Our day at the conference left us inspired and energised to bring a few new touches back to the salon in Kimberley, where we look after dogs from Hucknall, Nuthall, Eastwood, Watnall, and GiltBrook.
Morning demonstrations
The morning was packed with creativity and precision, featuring some of Europe’s top educators.

- James Holberry – Asian Style Schnauzer
Known for his award-winning Asian fusion work, James demonstrated how to transform the classic Schnauzer outline into a softer, rounded Asian-inspired look. His focus on balance and coat texture gave the trim a playful and kawaii-like charm - Lisa Hart – Asian Style Poodle
Lisa, a multi-award-winning stylist and respected international speaker, shared her techniques for achieving that perfect princess head. Her calm, patient approach and clear love for the dogs she works with made it a pleasure to watch. - Katya Usenik (Croatia) – Pomeranian Styling
Katya, known across Europe for her expertise with Pomeranians and premium coat care, focused on maintaining healthy double coats while still achieving a neat, rounded outline. She shared how understanding coat structure prevents over-trimming and keeps dogs comfortable long-term.
During this session, Julia Harris also gave a fascinating explanation about Pomeranian coat growth and what groomers call “coat funk.” She explained that when the outer guard hairs are cut too short, they can take a long time to regrow and in some cases may not grow back at all. It was a brilliant reminder of why coat health and correct technique always come before style trends.
Afternoon demonstrations
The afternoon focused on traditional grooming skills and breed-specific precision.

- Tony Rago (Italy) – Hand-Stripped Jack Russel
Tony, an international groomer and handler, demonstrated the art of hand-stripping on a wire-coated terrier. His technique was calm and exact, preserving the coat’s natural texture and colour. It was inspiring to see such craftsmanship applied with such quiet confidence. - Lisa Parker (UK) – Clipped Schnauzer
Lisa, who specialises in hand-stripped breeds and shows Miniature Schnauzers, shared her expertise in adapting breed patterns for everyday salon clients. Her tidy clipped Schnauzer trim was both practical and full of breed character.
What we took away
Days like this remind us that there’s always more to learn. We came home to Kimberley with fresh ideas, refined techniques, and plenty of enthusiasm to keep improving.
Every speaker reinforced something that aligns perfectly with our own philosophy: the best grooming happens when comfort, knowledge, and artistry come together.
We’re now keen to put some of these new techniques into practice and will soon be looking for a few local model dogs to help us refine our skills. These calm, structured sessions are always guided by our experienced groomers and make lovely opportunities for friendly, well-behaved dogs to enjoy some extra pampering while we continue learning.
If you’d like your dog to be considered as a model, keep an eye on our social pages or mention it during your next visit – we’d love to include some familiar faces.
Whether your dog visits us from Nuthall, Watnall, or Hucknall, you’ll continue to see the same calm professionalism and gentle care you know – now with a few new creative touches inspired by some of Europe’s most talented groomers.
Learning never stops at Hound
We’re proud to keep investing in our craft so that every dog who walks through our door receives the best possible care. Education keeps us inspired, skilled, and grounded in what matters most.
